The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of high-protein and high-glutamine diet on bone metabolism in rats. Matherial and methods: Male Wistar rats were divided into 3 groups of 6 animals and for 16 weeks were fed different diets. 1. group (KO): standard laboratory diet (SLD), 2. group (HPD): high-protein diet with casein, 3. group (GLN): glutamine-enriched diet. We assayed marker of bone resorption - C terminal telopetide of collagen I (ICTP) and markers of bone formation- osteocalcin (OC) and N-terminal propeptide of procollagen al energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Results: Concentration of ICTP significantly (p < 0.05) decreased...

Clin Osteol 2010; 15(1): 18-25

Bone disease in patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), analogous to adults with rheumatoid arthritis, is associated with focal (joint erosion and juxta-articular osteopenia) and systemic bone loss (generalized osteopenia or reduction of bone mass density). Contrary to adult patients, in children with JIA, the disease can be complicated by growth cartilage involvement and systemic or lo cal growth retardation. The pathophysiology of bone loss is multifactorial, similar to that in rheumatoid arthritis, and involves parti cularly the effects pro-inflammatory cytokines and glucocorticoid therapy. Research findings in patients withJIA indicate...

Clin Osteol 2010; 15(1): 26-29

Currently, there is an increasing number of overweight or obese patients. Obesity has become the most common lifestyle disease. It re presents a serious risk factor for cardiovascular and other diseases, not only in metabolic syndrome but also as a separate disease en tity. Physicians have always been concerned about the amount of body fat. In the past, various more or less precise methods were used for body fat measurements. Recently, attention has been paid to densitometry which appears to be most suitable for measuring the amount of fat in the metabolically most important abdominal area. Our study aimed at measuring body fat with a total body...

Clin Osteol 2010; 15(1): 30-34

Introduction: The risk of fracturing as a result of a fall is a very serious risk for people with osteoporosis. Utilization of controlled phy sical activity is one of the options for improving postural stability and expanding the choice of more difficult tasks. The aim of the stu dy was to assess the influence of controlled physical activity on the postural stability of female patients with osteoporosis. Methods: The patients (43 women with osteoporosis) were divided into two groups: the first group (n = 29, average age 64.6 ± 4.52 years) participated in long-term controlled physical activities, whereas the second group (n = 14, average age...
