The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of high-protein and high-glutamine diet on bone metabolism in rats. Matherial and methods: Male Wistar rats were divided into 3 groups of 6 animals and for 16 weeks were fed different diets. 1. group (KO): standard laboratory diet (SLD), 2. group (HPD): high-protein diet with casein, 3. group (GLN): glutamine-enriched diet. We assayed marker of bone resorption - C terminal telopetide of collagen I (ICTP) and markers of bone formation- osteocalcin (OC) and N-terminal propeptide of procollagen al energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA).

Results: Concentration of ICTP significantly (p < 0.05) decreased by 33 % in GLN vs. KO. Concentration of OC, PINP and BMD in tail de cantly.

Conclusion: GLN and HPD groups had decreased markers of bone turnover which contributed to decreased in tail BMD.

Keywords: glutamine, osteocalcin, N-t density
