Resuscitation of burned patients is closely associated with q extent and depth; also important is the time since the injury Thirty-five patients with at least 20 % TBSA (2nd-3rd-4th degree) burns were examined using DEXA HOLOGIC QDR 4500 whole body scans at 24, 48 and 72 hours postburn. Ther TBSA, the average extent being 34.34 % (n = 35). These burned patients were compared with a group of 34 non-burned individuals matched by height and weight and examined with DEXA. The whole body scans were used to determine the weight of fat tissue (FAT), lean tissue (LEAN), bone mineral content (BMC) and the total weight (FAT + LEAN + BMC) in various regions such...

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disorder also affecting the extra-articular systems. Patients with RA are known to have significantly reduced bone mass and to develop osteoporosis subsequently. The exact contribution of high in flammatory activity and vitamin D3 concentration to this the process is unclear. Objective: The study aimed at determining metabolism and vitamin D3 concentrations. Patients and methods: A total of 43 patients with different RA activity were examined. Their mean age was 52.4 years and the female-to-male ratio was 3.3 : 1. The patients were treated with neither anti-osteoporotic drugs nor vitamin...

Poor adherence to therapy is a widespread problem in the treatment of chronic diseases, particularly asymptomatic conditions. This risk may be eliminated, or at least controlled, by measuring the adherence. There are several methods which can evaluate objective and subjective parameters of the patient's approach to a treatment plan. Adherence to the therapy of osteoporosis is usually measured by indirect methods. Self-reports and pill counts, belonging to the simplest instruments, are easily applicable in clinical practice but there is a high risk of overestimation of the adherence. In the research of adherence to osteoporosis treatment, specific questionnaires...
Ankylosing spondylitis (Bechterew's disease) from an osteological perspectiveReview articles

Clin Osteol 2013; 18(1): 22-32
Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic rheumatic inflammatory disease mostly affecting the axial skeleton. Initial inflammatory changes in subchondral bone of the sacroiliac, vertebral and apophysealjoints associated with bone tissue erosion are followed by intensive bo ne formation processes leading to ankylosis of the affected structures. Patients with ankylosing spondylitis were shown to have abnor malities in complex systems participating in bone remodeling regulation (RANKL/RANK/OPG, Wnt/Dkk-1, Wnt/sclerostin and BMP/noggin), mediated by anti-inflammatory cytokines in some cases. The patients have higher prevalence rates of osteoporosis, par ticularly...
