Diabetes mellitus and osteoporosis are two serious civilization diseases with increasing incidence. Osteoporosis and osteoporotic fractures are already accepted as a severe co-morbidity and complications of diabetes mellitus. Atherosclerosis is characterized by persistent inflammation of the vascular wall and is considered to be a major cause contributing to the development of cardiovascular disease, which is the leading cause of death worldwide. Neurogenic heterotopic ossification

Neurogenic heterotopic ossification (NHO) is a complication affecting one in five patients after a spinal cord injury or traumatic brain injury. It leads to severe pain, loss of range of motion, as the joint gradually becomes ankylosed, leading to greater functional disability. The etiopathogenesis and risk factors of NHO remain poorly understood. The aim of this review was to focus on advances in the understanding of the underlying mechanisms of NHO, and possible options for the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of NHO.
