Procalcitonin and its role in current diagnosisReview articles

S. Skálová

Procalcitonin (ProCT) is a 116 amino acid protein with a sequence identical to that of the prohormone of calcitonin (32 amino acids). Under normal metabolic conditions, hormonally active calcitonin is produced and secreted in the C-cells of the thyroid gland after spe cific intracellular proteolytic procession of the prohormone proCT. Bacterial infections induce an ubiquitous increase of CALC-I gene expression and a constitutive release of proCT from all parenchymal tissues and differentiated cell types throughout the body, so that significant concentrations of proCT can be detected in the blood of patients with severe bacterial infection/sepsis. ProCT is not only a marker, but also a mediator of sepsis. Among the biomarkers for als with the current diagnostic role of proCT.
