CalciphylaxisNews

Šenk F.

Calciphylaxis is a rare and for the most part lethal disorder of calcium-phosphate (Ca-P) metabolism. It occurs primarily in patients on dialysis and after kidney transplantation. The pathogenesis of this condition has, as yet, not been unravelled and in consequence all treatment is only symptoma tic. It is a necrotic affection of the epidermis and dermis due to an extensive calcinosis of the arteriole media, which often goes hand in hand with a se condary infection of these areas and the development of a generalized septic condition - in most instances resulting in the patient's death. The letha lity of this disease depends, among other things, on the extent of necrosis, the severity and type of the complicating septic condition and the patient's age and co-morbidity.
