Vitamin D - new findings and endocrine microsystemsOriginal contributions
For a long time, vitamin D contained in cod liver oil has been used to prevent rickets in infants. Yet only after the chemical structure of provitamins D and their transfer to effective metabolites were discovered in the 1960s, the complex impact of this vitamin on the human organism has been gradually understood. Some of these findings have already been utilized in practice, others are used in cli nical studies. Information on calcitriol, its local formation, binding to nuclear receptors and local effect in tissues has resulted in un derstanding vitamin D endocrine microsystems. These findings, together with a sophisticated revision of the recommended daily in take of vitamin D in adults, provide potential prevention of many diseases in a natural way that does not increase treatment costs.
